The Legal Council is chaired by the Attorney General and composed of:
- The President of the Cyprus Bar Council
- The Vice President of the Cyprus Bar Council
- The Secretary of the Cyprus Bar Council
- Three advocates
The Council’s main powers and responsibilities are:
- The admission to practice and enrollment of advocates.
- To decide whether all the requirements of the Law are fulfilled for the initial registration of trainee lawyers.
- To decide whether all the requirements are fulfilled for the enrollment of advocates.
- To organize lectures and seminars for the trainee lawyers.
- To appoint the examiners for the examination of the trainee lawyers.
- To organize, conduct and approve the exams and their results for the trainee lawyers.The examinations are conducted by the Legal Council on certain subjects including:
- ) Administrative Law
- ) Constitutional Law
- ) Contract Law
- ) Evidence Law
- ) Torts
- ) Criminal Law
- ) Civil and Criminal Procedure
- ) Immovable Property Law
- ) Wills and Succession Law
- ) Courts of Justice Law /Advocates Law
- ) Company Law
- ) Family Law
Legal Council’s term of office is three years.
All the records of the Legal Council are kept in the Attorney General’s office.
The Chairman of the Legal Council convenes all the meetings of the Legal Council.
